The Envirothon competition is designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources among high school students. The competition tests students' knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. Local High School Students Attend Area Envirothon
The Area 5 Soil & Water Conservation Districts held their Annual Envirothon on May 9, 2025 , at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park outside of Columbus, Ohio. The following schools proudly represented Highland County by participating in this year’s contest; Lynchburg Clay High School coached by Lara Hamilton, Hillsboro FFA coached by Brian Cummings, Mowrystown coached by Brian DeAtley and McClain FFA coached by Mike Sykes. A total of 29 teams participated in the Area Envirothon contest. The Lynchburg Clay Gold team won 1st in the competition, making them eligible to compete in the State contest on June 2-4, 2025 at Wilmington College.

Tri-County Practice Envirothon Held at Adams County Fairgrounds
The 2025 Tri-County Practice Envirothon competition was held on March 25, 2025, at the Adams County Fairgrounds. The event was co-hosted by the Adams, Brown and Highland SWCD's with 10 teams competing. Highland County had six teams representing Lynchburg-Clay, Hillsboro, and Mowrystown High Schools.
The competition consisted of five students on a team, that tested their knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soil, wildlife and the current environmental topic. Once the test scores were tabulated, the Lynchburg-Clay Gold team placed 1st, and the North Adams took 2nd place in the event with Fayetteville rounding out the top three. Since this was a practice envirothon, all teams are eligible to compete in the Area 5 Envirothon to be held on May 9, 2025, at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park.
